Analysing why people subscribe to blogs

by Patrick Altoft on December 14, 2007

How often do you subscribe to new RSS feeds? If like me you already subscribe to hundreds you know that it takes something special to make you want to read a new blog. Maybe they are on Digg every week or they are written by somebody you consider an expert. Whenever I subscribe to a new blog there is always a very good reason why I do it.

Two of the blogs added to my reader in the last month or two were Caroline & Skellie, both for the same reason. I found that over the course of a couple of weeks I just kept reading about them. Reading comments Caroline left on my blog, guest posts by Skellie and even posts talking about what they had been writing about. All this happened before I’d even read anything they had written. Buzz marketing is all about getting people talking about your product and if you can get enough buzz readers like me will subscribe just to see what all the fuss is about. Of course both these blogs produce great content so there is no way I will be unsubscribing.

Another blog added to my reader last month was one that offered a list of free Yahoo Directory listed expired domains for his readers. A very nice gesture that was rewarded with at least one new subscriber.

Next time you decide to focus on building your subscriber base try to think of a reason people should subscribe.

You can get our blog posts delivered for free by email every day - simply add your email address to the box below or alternatively grab the RSS feed.

Sometimes it’s very hard to keep up with all the RSS subscriptions in a blog reader, but I do agree that it makes it easy to read older content.
