Weekly SEO Clinic: 10 Ways to improve your site

by Patrick Altoft on January 26, 2009

We’ve not done website reviews on Blogstorm for a while so I thought it would be a good idea to offer a weekly SEO clinic.

If you want your site reviewing with a 10 point checklist for improvements & suggestions for promotional strategies then please leave a comment below and we will take a look.

Patrick Altoft is Director of Search at Leeds based digital & SEO agency Branded3. Patrick also runs Blogstorm.

I’d love a review of my site, http://www.mmmeeja.com. The SEO is a looooong way from perfect and the budget £0 but I’m fairly pleased with how far I’ve come in the past year.

Fatgadget 26 Jan 2009 at 5:28 pm

Sounds like a great idea, I could definitely use some tips :)

Erica 26 Jan 2009 at 5:54 pm

My site would make an easy project, never focused on SEO.

Stuart Hughes 26 Jan 2009 at 5:59 pm

Hello Patrick,

I too would love a review of my site shdweb if you have a chance, thanks!

Brad 26 Jan 2009 at 6:00 pm

Yes pleasseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, I have been desperately trying to think of some extra ways to better SEO that I have not already implemented!

John Cronin 26 Jan 2009 at 6:05 pm

Hi Patrick

I’d be interested to hear your ideas on http://www.beautyhive.com …aiming for UK audience though site is a .com hosted on servers in America. Yeah, I know the /site-map is blank!

Sketchplanet 26 Jan 2009 at 6:08 pm

I’d like a review of Sketchplanet (www.sketchplanet.com). It should be quite high on Google since it uses headings, has it’s own RSS feeds for users as well as a general sitemap..and gets updated content. But doesn’t rank much for any keywords ;(

mike 26 Jan 2009 at 6:10 pm

We’d like to have some suggestions. We’ve barely scratched the surface with our SEO efforts, so I’m sure we’d be able to implement a great deal of the suggestions.

Keith Collantine 26 Jan 2009 at 6:18 pm

I’m always up for free advice :-)

And if you can tell me why the thing keeps throwing 500 Errors at random I’ll buy you a pint!

BFG 9000 26 Jan 2009 at 6:39 pm

Although some of the content is quite old, I’ve only just started blogging in earnest…
I’d be interested to hear your feedback on a new site.

Sounds a really interesting idea, and I would be glad to be the lucky winner of this “prize”.

I’ve been working hard to improve the SEO for my relatively new website, Lewisville Photos. Getting a first-hand review for improvements and suggestions for promotional strategies would be wonderful!

Claudius 26 Jan 2009 at 8:05 pm

Hey there!

It would be super if you could review my site and point me in the right direction. I’m aiming to get the Lewis Hamilton fan blog ranking better, especially for the ‘lewis hamilton’ keyphrase.

Brian 26 Jan 2009 at 8:27 pm

It is only a hobby site but with 450 pages and growing. Hits have stagnated so any clues would be useful even if I get them from your reviews of other sites

Derek 26 Jan 2009 at 8:54 pm

I’d love to be considered for the review. I feel like I’ve got a decent ground work already laid out, but I’m sure there are things I should be doing better / differently. Thanks!

I need major help. Please consider my site for improvements. And I need major help like I said.

Doctor Who Collectables 27 Jan 2009 at 4:17 am

I too would very much appreciate a review of my site, DoctorWhoCollectables.com. I’m struggling to get it to the audience I firmly believe it deserves, so your input would be gratefully received :-)

Hi Patrick,

I would love you to take a look at our online takeaway website http://www.e-resistible.co.uk/ particularly as you have written blog entries about our competition.

Like others on here we know there is a huge amount to do but a 10 point plan sounds like a great way to prioritise.

Thanks in advance!

Christina Mitchell 27 Jan 2009 at 3:08 pm

I’m a self employed therapist, and amateur SEO. I’ve only ever tried optimizing my own site, and while I’ve done a lot of work on it my competitors still outrank me. And they haven’t updated their sites in years!

Tony 27 Jan 2009 at 4:11 pm

It would be great if you could take a look at my site.
Thanks :)

Aibek 27 Jan 2009 at 6:56 pm

Hey Patrick, how about analyzing makeuseof.com. I believe you know our website for some time now and saw how it evolved from a small blog to 3 million views a month. I think it’ll make a good post and give us some valuable tips.

Mario Andrade 27 Jan 2009 at 9:06 pm

Hi

I have been i have been in a struggle for quite a while now with my blog muiomuio.net. The blog is almost 3 years old, it has an average of 800 visitors p/day for almost a year now.

I want to target specific “markets” like Brazil and Portugal (blog language is portuguese). For this i’ve used google webmaster tools to define a geotarget but it reached a point about 4 months ago and it’s stuck there.

I want to spread the blog as much as I can to all portuguese language bloggers but can’t spend money as I am unemployed right now.

Any tips on how to make a 2 year, 8 month old blog better?

I can give you a full story of the blog if you are interested. Especially my goals for 2008 and 2009 with this blog.

Nick 27 Jan 2009 at 9:45 pm

Would love the help. We’re kind of in the dark ages here :)

Lee 27 Jan 2009 at 10:39 pm

I think if you’re getting 3m pageviews per month you can afford to pay for seo and let someone with a new or struggling site get the free advice!

Helmut Watterott 28 Jan 2009 at 12:30 am

Just did a big re-arrange of my site. Meta, keywords are ok but I still need to do quite a bit on the interlinking pages

Aibek 28 Jan 2009 at 5:01 am

Lee, you missed the point. We already have someone working for us, so analyzing our template might potentially reveal lots of great tips.

Remiz 28 Jan 2009 at 6:12 am

Rowen Ravera 28 Jan 2009 at 12:18 pm

Heya, we’re an adventure tour company that’s young and our site was built middle of last year.

We have dashes in traffic after social marketing, but no natural search engine traffic. Also we have a problem with conversion on the site, if you could point out where we’re going horribly wrong with that too?

Thanks! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts!
