Twitter Search is about to become awesome

by Patrick Altoft on May 7, 2009

Twitter Search is undergoing some interesting changes under the direction of Santosh Jayaram the former VP of Search Quality at Google.

The most exciting change is that Twitter is going to start crawling the content of links posted to index the content of the destination pages as well as the text in the tweet.

They are also looking at my suggestion about ranking results based on the reputation & relevance of users.

Twitter Search will also get a reputation ranking system soon, Jayaram told me. When you do a search on a “trending” topic (a topic that is so big it gets its own link in the Twitter.com sidebar), Twitter will take into account the reputation of the person who wrote each tweet and rank search results in part based on that.

We’ve always known that search is key to Twitters revenue and these changes would probably make it the second most important search tool after Google. That’s massive.

I will be glad when it happens, the search facility has been on of the most basic aspects of twitter. Improved facilities will only add to the user experience. Rgds Vince

When I see it I’ll believe it :) Actually I really hope that it’s true because I’ve come to love Twitter search over the past few weeks but I’d love to see it improved significantly.

I think this is great news for twitter, they need to make money online as an industry and to not have a current revenue model in place it must be expensive for them to maintain and run every to make twitter successful.

I kind of disagree, won’t this make twitter more like Google? But we already have Google. If I want to search for something based on authority and relevancy I’ll just use Google. The point about twitter is that you are searching real time comments from everyone and everybody no matter who they are. I’d be very afraid that this will give those with authority priority in twitter, so internet “celebrities” with successful blogs will go on to dominate yet another area of the internet.

I suppose it makes sense as Twitter moves to be more commercial and needs to please those people with the power.

@BLOGERCISE Google is a search Engine…..twitter is not. I dont think the aim of Improving Twitter Search is to make it anything like Google atall. but to assist its users in finding quality information they want.

FYI: Santosh Jayaram was Manager of OSO at Google not VP of Search Quality as article online quotes. I can’t believe Main Stream Media and High Profile Bloggers don’t Google before publishing something on their website. :)

Twitter has been famous because some celebrities are addicted to it like Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher but Twitter didn’t only made it to the top through them but because of its qualities. Whenever I come across blogs stating that Twitter is the newest thing in the net, I have to agree. Even bloggers are twittering, for example, someone posted something and at the end of the post, there would be a link saying that if you liked his post you could follow him on Twitter. All in all, Twitter is great so I am not surprised at all if it is about to become awesome. More power to Twitter!

I think Twitter search is way too spammy – I don’t see how it’s about to get better unless there becomes some great SEO value out of it.
