The Weblog is 10 Years Old Today

by Patrick Altoft on / 5 responses

CakeBlogging was 10 years old on July 14th but it wasn’t until December 17th 1997 that the word “weblog” was invented.

The term was invented by Jorn Barger and subsequently shortened to “blog” by Peter Merholz and his blog Peterme.com in April or May of 1999.

The original weblog was pretty much like todays link blog, a collection of links to other destinations. Nowadays a blog is a destination itself and is more like an online magazine.

Wired has some tips for new bloggers today but my best tip is to write your blog as if you were writing a magazine. Interesting feature articles, eye catching headlines, details about your authors and nice bright images work perfectly.

How old is your blog?

Well, our website is 10 years old next year, but we didn’t start actually blogging until we adopted WordPress in 2005.

Yeah, well, we’ve always been slow.

The Weblog is NOT 10 years old. How about 14? We used weblogs when we were developing what would become the seed of one of the largest auction systems in the world. It was public, and extremely popular. It saddens me that every time some 2 year would-be expert falls off his tricycle and onto the internet asserting self-proclaimed authority he seldomg takes time to actually learn the ropes. of course, that would take effort, and that generation holds little more than contempt for anything that might take some work.

Learn the web. Then make an educated and informed statement. It will be much better than the blind, 1/2 thought our jibberish I see here.

Sad, very sad.

I started an “online journal” which was, for all intents and purposes a blog by any other name, in September of 1995 – twelve years ago. And I was inspired by others who were already journaling at the time.

I have long found it distasteful that the invention of the term “blog” (or weblog) and the invention of the thing itself are confused as one and the same.

Nowadays, everything looks so much like a blog, that some of my clients would turn to me and say “Please do not make it look like a blog!”.

My blog is less than a year old, that is very old – compared to the rate of change in my blogging haha !
