The Googlenet

by Patrick Altoft on September 2, 2008

With the launch of Google Chrome (7pm UK time) the circle is now complete and Google IS the Internet. Of course this isn’t quite true but Google has amassed a huge amount of control over our lives – it’s fair to say if Google had a massive system failure the Internet would grind to a halt.

Googlenet

I can open up my Google Chrome browser and search Google to find information on something, up comes a Google Knol result which gives me the information I required.

Next I load up Blogger and write a blog post about the subject and include a few images stored in my Picasa photo album.

Perhaps I need to read a few blog posts using Google Reader or check my emails on Gmail. Later on I might read all the news headlines via Google News and then watch a few videos on YouTube.

In fact a lot of people could spend an entire day online without ever wandering off a Google property.

The only thing chink in Googlenet armour is mobile (soon to be fixed when Android launches) and social – will Google buy Facebook, Myspace or somehow figure out how to get everybody using Orkut?

or somehow figure out how to get everybody using Orkut?

In India (one of the two most important emerging markets, if not the most) it’s the biggest network – we sometimes forget that not everyone uses the same things we do in the West (see also Yahoo’s dominance in many Asian markets)

To be honest, that doesn’t very well. Am I the only one who couldn’t help thinking about Equilibrium or Minority Report?

Why not if the browser stay truly open source.

I know I’ll be using my FF3 until Chrome matches the feature set (including plugins) and I guess there is still long way to there.

Btw. suddenly Adsense Firefox referral program closing few months ago starts to make sense.

Google is everywhere. I like it because it is inspirational and shows that you can do almost everything if you have the policy “what users want”. On the other hand it is kinda scary but then again… doesn’t the US government know everything about us anyway?

I definitely agree with “Google IS the internet”… it’s a bitter-sweet fact.

What I meant to say was that Google is slowly taking over our lives.

Mikael 05 Sep 2008 at 9:56 am

Vlad, “taking over lives” seems a bit drastic don’t you thing? They might be monitoring our lives but “taking over” requires some kind of participation from us IMO.

Vlad Balan 05 Sep 2008 at 10:27 am

Yeah, I know it’s drastic, I’m exaggerating, of course. But it’s really weird, just like Patrick said, that some people might spend all day online without leaving Google properties.

Well, I just hope they don’t use this power to collaborate with malicious governments to enslave us.

The Maxthon browser is popular in China.
