Startup 1BigPresent Creates Gift Lists for your Party

by Patrick Altoft on / 11 responses

Yesterday I met a local startup company to discuss a new site they’ve launched called 1 Big Present which allows you to set up a gift list for a party, wedding or any other kind of event.

The idea is that rather than everybody turning up at the party with gifts you didn’t want you can direct them to your online gift list where they upload money that you can redeem for vouchers at places such as Amazon & John Lewis.

The site is one of the few brand new sites we see that has a real chance of becoming a mainstream website. It has all the boxes ticked – concept, design and even viral marketing elements.

If you’re having a party and 50 guests each pay £5 into your birthday fund that gives you a £250 voucher rather than 50 small gifts you didn’t really want. Apparently kids who have used the service for their parties have walked away with hundreds of pounds already.

The site is .co.uk and the logo says .com. When you go to .com you see a nice duplicate homepage in an /index.? file on the .co.uk domain.

They might want to look into that, I like the idea though.

Doesn’t this kind of service dehumanize the whole process of being a gift, being thoughtful and buying that unique (that you might not be able to buy in John Lewis or Amazon?).

I am sure the massmarket will bite, as it’s an excellent idea… but there will always be a use for a second or third toaster…

Yet another annoyingly simple yet effective idea I wish I’d thought of!

I don’t do paid posts and never will do. Why would you think this was a paid post?

Any post about a website could look like you’re plugging a client, especially a site like One Big Present that’s run locally. I have to defend you here though because I have it on good authority it’s not a paid post!

Every great idea not only relies on professional execution on the design but a dedicated marketing campaign is in my eyes the key to any sites success. This is a great design, nice and simple, but the success is in the hands of it’s marketiers! I hope is does well :)
