Google has published an excellent guide about SEO today (embedded below) but I don’t think it gives enough information to small business owners about the importance of links.
Most people I meet have an understanding of basic on-page SEO. Very few people understand that for a new site to get to the top of even a moderately competitive industry it’s going to need the attention of a skilled link builder.
Isn’t this something Google needs to address in more detail? I realise it’s a tricky subject but it’s important to give small business owners the same knowledge that people in the SEO industry have. I don’t necessarily mean knowledge about how to build links but at least a basic understanding of just how important they are.
Watch out for part 2, the Google Link Acquisition Starter Guide.

Good post. By switching your normal static website into a blog, you will get your hands on one of the most effective “SEO toolsâ€.All online businesses are looking for more targeted traffic to be able to increase their business revenue. A blog is an excellent way of getting targeted traffic because you will be indexed in the search engines really fast, often in days instead of several months.
There were numerous mentions of garnering ‘reputation’ through links from other websites, but the fundamental importance of links wasn’t really conveyed in this article.
It’s always nice to see Google officially recognising Search Engine Optimisation, especially in a publication like this. It proves to people, especially those in Ireland (SEO is b******t), that SEO is a legitimate practice.
Very nice attempt by Google to come up with their SEO guide for webmsaters, Good that Google understands that SEO is not dead.
Totally with Luke on this one. It just seems that they are being as coy as ever with their guidance around links – something that makes it all the more confusing for newbiews. I wonder whether they’re unsure of how to present the ideas of link-building in a non-manipulative way, i.e. how much they should go into the subject?
I don’t get it personally – some explanation of link-building. Without this guidance, people are far more likely to be led astray, be ripped off, or simply fail.
At least they are moving forward, I guess….
I agree! Link building is half the equation, I would have thought they would have touched on it a little more than they did too, but then again, it is a guide, and it does not go into too much detail about anything.
Good to see Google giving out a bit of info at least! Long may it continue.
Terrified of being slapped by Google I am getting very confused as a newcomer to SEO etc and the push towards web 2.0 as it seems that the most heinous crime on Twitter for example is marketing!
A lot of people seem to believe that Twitter or any other social network deal and marketing can’t go together and that any marketing is therefor Spam.
Is this comment of mine then to be considered as Spam or enthusiasm and the need to spread the word?
Here is a post I just put on another SEO blog which of course went out all over the web 2.0 sites through my Ping account and I am now worried it will appear to be spam… see what you think:

SEO I believe has to be the key to online success as adwords are now way too expensive.
But what if you do all the SEO stuff and it works but your site conversion doesn’t work for all the traffic you now have?
Site design is such a subjective thing and how do you know if, when you decide what to use and do, it works or not really?
BUT it is so important to get it right as if you do it’s worth a fortune and if you don’t it could cost you a fortune.
I am so happy that I have discovered this web marketers tool for example and I am just so excited to have finally found a tool like this I can’t begin to tell you!
It is free for a good single site owner user and you only have to pay if you use it on more than three sites.
Without a doubt it is the absolute best tool I have ever seen or used and because of the free test I got I am now using it on everything I do.
It is so insightful I am now going to redesign my sites (with confidence!) as finally I can see what needs doing because of this tool.
I can’t say more than that except that if you have a site and you care about getting it right then you really need to consider this tool http://budurl.com/musthavetool

So what do you say?
My believe is that I found a product we should all know about as it is such a difference maker to REALLY know what people do when they hit your site and to have a chance at tweaking because of the evidence you see..
If that is spam then there is something wrong with the world
I have gone through it. It is really nice attempt made by google.
Google mad this so that people can improve their site and google present it’s users the most relevant results….
But this guide is not the complete SEO…..
