Olympic SEO part 2

by Patrick Altoft on / 5 responses

Yesterday I wrote a post about the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Google picked up the post in the blog search results at the bottom of this page which is linked directly from the Google logo for the duration of the Olympics.

So far in about 20 hours over 500 people have clicked on the link. Not bad when you consider there are over 20 links above it on the page including a lot of high authority websites. My guess is that the click through rate to the blog search results is probably less than 1%.

I actually think the results in the UK are quite poor for this term, as a user I want to see sites like the BBC and some newspapers in the results rather than the sites that are being listed.

I’m still not sure why other people aren’t picking up on these things, writing a blog post takes 10 minutes and if you owned a sports news website the traffic is going to be ideally targeted.

I don’t see any blog results there. I’m afraid Google hasn’t rolled out the blog results feature outside the US/UK yet.

I was very surprised by the PPC experiment – or more the lack of ads!

In all fairness, I am wondering about the quality of traffic for such a term. I am curious as to why people like Samsung (official mobile phone of the Olympics) haven’t got an ad running.

I agree too with your statement about sports blogging. If you can achieve a listing for a technology blog, it must be fair game for sports related blogs.

Thanks for the idea Patrick

I’ve just made a post on my blog to try it out (and, of course, included a linkback to your original post – giving credit where it’s due!). It’ll be interesting to see how it works

Thanks again, Jon

I have noticed many Olympic terms in the Google Trends like “Bob Costas height” and “French swimmer” that could also be easily optimized.
