Google really thinks my name = SEO

by Patrick Altoft on February 19, 2008

Following on from my post about how Google thinks my name = SEO the issue seems to be moving from blog search results to the main index.

Before I was getting Google Alerts whenever somebody wrote about SEO, the alerts were based on results from the Google Blog Search index. Now if you search for Patrick Altoft in Google you can see the same results are now coming up in the main index.

Most of the results for my name are about me (as you would expect) but there are a good number that don’t have my name on the page. Looking at the cached page for one result Google says that the terms “only appear in links pointing to this page” which isn’t the case.

I’m sure that this must be a good thing. How long before a search for Patrick Altoft brings up a note saying “Did you mean: seo“?

You can see in the (edited) screenshot below none of these results have my name on the page and I couldn’t see any backlinks to the pages with my name in them either.

Patrick,

do you know if this suggestion from Google “did you mean” can be influenced? I was looking for information on the subject but could not find anything, on light of a recent event in Brazil: Preta Gil, a brazilian actress was recently said to sue Google for having her name associated with a google image search for “atriz gorda” ( fat actress) did you mean: Preta Gil, in what looks to be a publicity stunt. Pictures of said actress only appeared on the second page of the results for “fat actress”.

The suggestion is no longer live, looks like a hand edit from Google. But what is interesting is that Google local communications director blamed bloggers for an attempted Google bomb. This seems quite ignorant and untypical of Google; and I haven’t come across any “widespread” technique that could justify this accusation.

url for the search: images.google.com.br/images?hl=pt-BR&q=atriz+gorda&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=ni

I’m sure the results could be influenced if enough people searched for something. Google is pretty clever though so you would need to make a massive effort to influence the results.
