My first time: Social media Jan 2006

by Patrick Altoft on September 21, 2007

Back in January 2006 I was trying to build some natural links to my V7ndotcom SEO contest website and created a mashup of Google Maps and the Google search results using the now defunct Google API.

The mashup allowed you to search for whatever term you wanted and would bring up the top 10 results on a map of the world, positioned according to the location the website was hosted in. It was a pretty cool tool and thanks to some vote begging on the DP forums it soon hit the ShoutWire homepage sending over 2500 uniques in the few hours it stayed up before getting banned.

During this experience I learnt a number of things. The main one was that no matter how cool your content is nobody will link to a SEO contest website. The second was that you should never openly ask for votes in a forum and the third was that I loved the buzz that hitting the homepage of a popular social media site gave.

When did you discover social media?
