Very clever idea – instant access to lots of design talent! This is definitely a competition to watch.
Design contests hurt the design community and our livelyhood, and promote crappy design practices.

I’m a bit disappointed in this blog for promoting one.
Hi Patrick. I’ve just taken a look at your entries, and I’d go for number 13. Just thought I’d add my £0.02

Eric, I’ve never had a logo designed in this way before and wasn’t aware that using a contest would hurt the community in any way.
The reason I chose a contest was so that I would get to see lots of designs from different people. The way I see it is the same as when we pitch for web design or SEO contracts. We spend days and thousands of pounds on the pitch and are competing against perhaps 10 other companies. The company with the best ideas normally wins.
More comments from Patrick AltoftI’m really neutral on using design contests vs design agencies. You get good and bad results with both.
I’ve used design contests a lot lately. Used them twice for the flyer for my fiancée’s current Ed Fringe theatre show (“I Love You! And You… And You…”. Once to get the logo designed, and then another to get the flyer designed.
I did the logo design on 99designs (previously SitePoint contests) and I did the flyer design through crowdspring.
I used crowdspring as they were the new starter and I found the quality of the entries on there to be much higher, but less quantity. This actually works out best, as we had 169 entries for the logo competition, of which about 150 were horrifically bad. And it saps a huge amount of time to manage the competition, so bear that in mind – as you really need to rate and review every entry briefly.
Here are the final designs of the flyer which everyone has been raving about, so you can see the quality of what’s possible from these design competitions:
