Bloggers in Supercars – 6th Gear Driving Experiences

by Patrick Altoft on November 17, 2008

Yesterday I was invited to attend what is probably the first time a group of bloggers has been let loose in £1 million worth of supercars.

Organised by 6th Gear Driving Experiences the day involved myself, Al Carlton, Dave Naylor, Kieron Donoghue and Chris Garrett.

Driving Experiences

We arrived at 10.30 and started off being a passenger in a Range Rover so we could get some tips and get a feel for the track.

Next I was let loose in the 191mph Lamborghini Gallardo which was super fast. After the instructor had told me to stop changing gear at 4000 rpm and take it to 7000 rpm it got even faster. Being 4 wheel drive you could take corners at ridiculous speeds.

Lamborghinis

Next up was a few laps in an Aston Martin DB9 and the V8 Vantage. Both cars were fantastic but not quite up to the Gallardos standard.

To give us an indication of how things should be done were were taken round the track for 2 laps in a Caterham driven by an ex touring car driver. Nothing feels as fast as the Caterham because it’s pretty much just an engine and 4 wheels. The driver takes you right to the limit and is fighting to keep the car under control at all times.

Finally we had another fast lap in the passenger seat of the 640bhp BMW M3 CSL. Probably the fastest saloon car you can buy. The driver had it going nicely sideways at one stage and we couldn’t decide whether it was intentional or not.

The whole day was pretty much perfect and we will certainly be going back. It’s the end of the season now but 6th Gear are planning another bloggers day in March so keep an eye out.

If you are looking for a Christmas gift then 6th Gear do driving experience vouchers for £89 – a perfect present for anybody who likes cars.

Looks like you all had a good day. I saw the report from Kieron last night.

Are you going to be uploading more photos to Flickr or similar?

That looks like a very cool day out for a blogger, but also a great experience for £89 with Christmas fast approaching – for a person who never knows what to get when people as me, it’s giving me ideas! :)

Sounds like you had a great time, Patrick.

Not sure if you know, but I was the one who created their new and current Web site. Simon gave me a lift home in the white Lambo LP640 after our initial meeting. Great guys to work with, and even better to drive with. :)

It was a great day, Patrick, coolest blogger outing yet :) my pics are up at flickr now if you want to include any in your roundup?

I did this a couple of weeks ago. Went out in a Vantage, an F355 and a Murciélago.

The Vantage is far too tame, and has flappy paddle shifts. Boo.

The 355 and the Murciélago are much more raw, with gorgeous clunky 6-speed manual boxes. Much, much more fun. The Murciélago was my favourite.

I’m going to organize this for my stag party I think! Ugly strippers or beautiful cars? Easy decision ;)

Lambo every time, though I would of given anything to of been taken around the track in the Caterham, that car was like a rocket!

What a perk! Looked like a great day, Patrick. I hope you’ve been keeping well lately.

Geoff Jackson 17 Nov 2008 at 3:47 pm

Mental. Bet that was an awesome day out! :) Considering getting the Driving Experience package myself, heh.

Charles 17 Nov 2008 at 4:36 pm

Geoff: If you buy one of these outings for yourself, then get the most time/laps you can afford. If you only buy a couple of laps you’ll be sorely disappointed. The more time you spend in the cars, the better you’ll become aquainted with the car and the track, and the more enjoyment you’ll get out of it.

Jamie, I take it from your logo that cars with 6 gears don’t have a reverse gear then?? fail.

Jamie Harrop 17 Nov 2008 at 5:17 pm

Hey John,

We might have done the Web site, but we didn’t do the logo. That was done before me and my team came on the scene. :)

Phew. That’s a relief. ;)
