Beijing 2008 Olympic Games why is nobody going for this term?

by Patrick Altoft on / 8 responses

We all know that optimising a page for a phrase that Google has decided to use for a logo can send a lot of traffic.

Normally the logo link only lasts for a day but during the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Google is using a logo link every single day!

What I find amazing is that despite the huge amount of people searching for this term there are no major news websites aggressively targeting it.

Sitevisibility did an experiment using Adwords and saw over 1000 impressions per minute. Why isn’t anybody else trying this?

That is a pity that Australia is not amongst the first three winners of medals.

Yeah… that’s pretty much how I found this page.

I read a story somewhere saying a huge number of Americans are reading about the Olympics online. With all the attention and redirects to the Olympics, of course there’s going to be a lot of attention. I opened up my homepage, and there’s a picture of a monkey doing gymnastics.

I do have to say though, it’s convenient to be able to pull up my home page, click on the Google logo, and see which countries have the most medals. I refuse to watch the Olympics, but I still want my country to beat out China for the most gold (though it looks like it’s not gonna happen).

Actually now there is someone else ranking for that term on that front page :)http://richard-wilson.blogspot.com/2008/08/beijing-2008-olympic-games.html

Thanks to your team for this tip for a boost in traffic.

I’ve been a huge fan of your site and tools over the past 13 months and over the last 13 months I have been sucking up knowledge from SEOMoz like no tomorrow. In that amount of time I have gone from not knowing how to blog or what SEO was to being a professional blogger and freelance marketing consultant in my industry. I recommend your site daily to others.

Cheers

The Beijing 2008 Olympic Games is a great marketing opportunity. As a seasonal marketing, the best thing is that pretty much all kind of businesses can take advantage of it.

Hey Patrick,

Hope all is good, did you notice that the Google Doodle now sends to Beijing 2008 as opposed to Beijing 2008 Olympic Games ??

It has been like that for a few days, and the blog links seem to have gone as well… Maybe they read my post :D
Furthermore, I only saw one company bidding for the term, and that was Lenovo… Good on them

I saw that too. I was too lazy to write a second post optimizing for that new keyword set but I did get over 3,000 visits by optimizing for the first string…98.5% of those people were new visitors and I think I gained a few email subscribers due to the efforts….fun to shoot for.
