Thanks patrick,

I really like the first two slides & the roadmap for product launch.Would be nice if you’d given more weightage on link building methods for ecommerce sites. Also, eagerly waiting from your end to know more on panda update for ecommerce site to regain lost ranking.

Thanks again.

Really good presentation Patrick. I would have liked to have seen it ‘live’.

It’s a touch challenge optimising a big e-commerce site and your tips are a valuable help to both newbies and pros.

I picked up a couple of good tips :-)

Looking forward to hearing you speak at SMX London next week.

SEO for ecommerce sits is a little bit harder because you have to add some type of value in order for other sites to link to you

Hi Patrick, I’m a big fan of what you write and am always impressed with your dedication to Blogstorm alongside holding down a day job at Branded3. Nevertheless I am a little disturbed by what I understand from slide 4, which shows your Roadmap for a product launch. It seems to be saying write a link-worthy blog post about the product prior to launch, and then after you’ve built links to it redirect them to the product page after launch. Isn’t this a bit ‘grey’, as, surely, you are manipulating the link love for one thing – the blog article – onto another – the product page. I know they are both about the product, but this seems to me a little too ‘sharp’ to be building an e-commerce strategy around.

Steve – My suggestion is to write an article about how a new product will be coming out soon and then redirecting it to the product page when the product is ready for sale and the blog post is no longer relevant. Seems a perfectly legitimate strategy to me, I would do this whether search engines existed or not.

Thanks 4 the presentation. I can see why the top keywords are are retained ex Audio visual & technology specialty e-tailer, AlltecStores recently acquired and relaunched Headphones.com as part of their website network. Makes a lot of sense when you look at your presentation if you do not pay to high a price, but then seo prices for good people are high.

Okay, I understand, however, I think the more link-worthy the blog post – which appears to be a critical part of the plan, i.e. somewhat more than a release announcement – the less it becomes a legitimate source of a ‘permanently moved’ redirection to the product itself.

I don’t mean to sound picky about this, but a piece of linkbait about a forthcoming product, that might achieve your ‘Social Media’ > ‘Link building’ > ‘Blogger Outreach’ > ‘Rankings’ > ‘Traffic’ objectives is hardly 301 material to the product itself, which is unlikely ever to enjoy such links.

I do appreciate this is a particularly tough part of enterprise e-commerce SEO, and doesn’t get much easier when trying to get quality links into those really valuable and highly important category pages. All said, I don’t mean to sound too critical. Particularly as I happily consume your good stuff without comment!

Keep up the good work.

Great presentation!

So I do have one question though; how do you get people to place the widget on their site?

What’s the incentive for the site owner? Is there an affiliate relationship of some kind?

Reply

May 15, 2011 at 7:20pm

Jason, the incentive varies depending on the site. It could be anything.

The 3rd page is very helpful, the process for eCommerce website, it is new thing for me to consult my customers, just not quite sure if the roadmap suitable for Malaysian eCommerce site since there are some difference in between consumer behaviour in Malaysia compared to your country, Patrick.

Do you have any data regarding Malaysian eCommerce indsutry?

Thanks Patrick –

Thanks for the comments re: incentivization. I imaging it could be anything, do you have any good examples of getting widgets on a site without either a previous relationship or a affiliate/monetary relationship of some kind?

Thanks!

Hi Patrick,

Very nice presentations,
E-commerce site challenges on page 2 and 3, agree with the things. We have to face keywords issue while working on E-Commerce site, as per seo guidelines and rules we need to work on 3-4 keyword for each page. But practically it’s not possible to target 3000 keywords for single site, we can’t focus on too many keywords.
Do you think it possible? please suggest

Thanks for interesting post
John

One of my favorite things about the SEO community is how willing everyone is to share ideas, legitimate ones, amongst themselves. United we stand! Thank you, Patrick.

Brilliant presentation, and good overview of e-commerce SEO strategy.

Surprised there was no mention of creating supporting web pages and landing page copywriting — these can significantly enhance SEO (and SEM quality scores). Our Austin online marketing company has been very successful in driving traffic, conversions and reducing PPC costs with this.

Thanks,

Just came across your presentation – some really good ideas. The constant challenge of attracting people and keeping them engaged to a sales site.

I think for any commercial website, it’s getting harder vs. publishers who have the ready made audiences.

Personally, I see Niche e-commerce as the only real untapped area vs. the massive ‘Oligarchs’ of Amazon and the like.

Excellent tips in there – thanks for posting.

For expired products you recommend keeping the pages live and showing similar products. At what point do you think that gets to be too much. For example, on a site like eBay that’s has a high churn?
