"In short, yes. Especially if the competitor was doing other shady things such as buying links themselves."

If Google would handle it really like this that would be the doom of the internet. It's one thing when people can manipulate their ranking for their own site with money (buy links) but it will definitely hurt the rankings extremely if you can shoot down competitors websites that easily...

It's a shame that it's allready possible to "kill" the rankings from any website you want if you have enough knowledge and "power".

Great post. Up to date and relevant. Just wishing that big G will be smarter by only punishing the dirty tricks and not the organic and natural link building ways.

To me the whole thing is very confusing. Partially because I'm partially blonde, (LOL) and partially because I'm not an expert as SEO, ad don't claim to be.
I do wish though that by some miracle a few PR7 + Sites would link to my site, and in some miraculous way I would be at the top. I don't think it's fair for the blackhat methods to steal the spotlight while others like me, work their butts off, and try to do things the honest way.
But that is just the world we live in I suppose. Eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth...BUT!!..Just remember..."What comes around, goes around"! And hard work pays off in the long run! That is what I keep trying to tell myself anyway...lol ;-)

Google doesn't count these links anymore. I use to make 6 figures a month with just an old website and 200K co-op weight. Trust me those days are gone.

I think co-op *may* still work in MSN and Yahoo but don't know for sure.

You mentioned
I have no doubt that if I was to point 25 million links at one of my websites it would be de-indexed within days if not hours
so was wondering whether if you think that it's relatively easy this way to manipulate competitor rankings?

Errr, do you really think Google is not able to spot the Coop-Trackingpixels? I highly doubt that those Coop links have any kind of impact on the SERP (apart from highlighting the fact that the website might using shady seo tactics).
