10 Ways to Prevent Death by Blogging

by Patrick Altoft on April 7, 2008

Following yesterdays article about how bloggers appear to be suffering from heart attacks as well as a range of other ailments I decided to try and offer a few tips to keep healthy while you update your blog.

Apparently bloggers complain of weight fluctuations, sleep disorders, exhaustion and other symptoms stemming from the strain of striving to produce top quality articles 24 hours a day.

To be sure, there is no official diagnosis of death by blogging, and the premature demise of two people obviously does not qualify as an epidemic. There is also no certainty that the stress of the work contributed to their deaths. But friends and family of the deceased, and fellow information workers, say those deaths have them thinking about the dangers of their work style.

How to keep healthy while you blog

  • Quit smoking
  • Take regular exercise between posts
  • Lose weight
  • Lower your cholesterol
  • Lower your blood pressure
  • Drink plenty of water while writing
  • Eat fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Try to reduce your salt intake
  • Take regular breaks from your blog

Healthy foods to eat while you blog

According to research the foods below will help keep you healthy while you are blogging:

  • Dark chocolate
  • Nuts
  • Guacamole
  • Shrimp

Since I’ve quit my 9-5 job and just blog now I’ve found I eat healthier since I have full access to my refrigerator and kitchen and work out more since I don’t have to sit at my desk and “look busy”.

Having said that, I can also understand the stress caused by blogging but as long as everyone paces themselves we shouldn’t have any epidemics.

Full disclosure: I’m COO of http://www.fluidessentials.com, a nutritional supplement maker.

My take centers on L-Tryptophan. Stress, anxiety, depression, overwork, PMS, caffeine and nicotine all lower serotonin levels. Tryptophan raises serotonin levels. Serotonin is your calming, mood-enhancing hormone that helps decrease stress, carb cravings, nicotine cravings and improves sleep.

I can send a mountain of research if wanted. Here is just one link to one study on nicotine and serotonin: http://ajp.psychiatryonline.org/cgi/content/full/160/4/773

Good luck!

Matt

I like your article.. However, I think it could apply to all fields and not just blogging.

Because of the nature of blogging, we have to sit at a computer for hours a day. This is no different than those who sit at an office for hours a day (which I do while blogging haha)

Cheers!
